Theory Test Pro in partnership with Queens Cross Driving School
Reasons for choosing an ADI?

It’s not often that anyone other than an Approved Driving Instructor will have the knowledge and training to provide the skills to help you drive safely.

Approved Driving Instructors (ADI’s) are trained to an extremely high standard and have all taken and passed a very complex theory test, an advanced driving test and a very strict testing of their teaching abilities.

How do ADI’s achieve their grading?

Fully qualified ADIs are obligated to take further regular tests. These are called check tests. A senior examiner will examine an ADI during a ‘live’ driving lesson. The examiner is employed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Check tests maintain the quality of driving instruction and ensure the ADI is properly graded.

The Driving Standards Agency define the quality. Once the check test has ended, the ADI is graded according to his/her ability. The Examiner uses his experience in deciding which grade the Instructor should attain.

   Competent - Grade 4
   Good - Grade 5
Extremely high standard - Grade 6

Remember - Driving Instructors have to go through a very stringent qualification process which involves taking a three part exam. Only when they demonstrate that they have a sound understanding of instructor techniques will they be awarded with the green badge.

The Grades explained courtesy of the DSA…

GRADE 4
A competent overall performance with some minor deficiencies in instructional technique. Acceptable recap with limited pupil involvement and objectives for the current lesson outlined. Demonstrated the ability to vary/select the most appropriate instructional techniques as necessary to suit most of the needs, aptitude and ability of the pupil. Recognised and addressed the important driving faults, providing generally sound analysis and remedial action. An acceptable route chosen for the pupil's ability and experience, taking advantage of most of the opportunities to develop the pupil's driving skills and awareness using problems presented en-route. Structured a generally appropriate learning environment that provided opportunities for the pupil to develop their skills and good driving practise. The lesson concluded with a general summary, giving an accurate overview of the lesson. The main strengths and weaknesses in the pupil's performance identified. Attitude and approach to the pupil was acceptable throughout the lesson.

GRADE 5
A good overall standard of instruction with some minor weaknesses in instructional technique. A recap given on the previous lesson and objectives set for the current lesson, with pupil involvement. Demonstrated the ability to vary/select the most appropriate instructional techniques as necessary to suit the needs, aptitude and ability of the pupil, with only minor weaknesses. Recognised and addresses all important driving faults and provided sound analysis with appropriate remedial action. An appropriate route chosen for the pupil's ability and experience taking advantage of most of the opportunities to develop the pupil's driving skills and awareness using the problems presented en-route. Structured an appropriate learning environment in which the pupil could readily further develop their skills and good driving practise. The lesson concluded with a concise recap, which was an accurate overview of the lesson. The strengths and weaknesses in the pupil's performance identified and discussed. Objectives set for next lesson. Attitude and approach to the pupil was good throughout the lesson.

GRADE 6
Overall performance is at a very high standard with no significant instructional weaknesses. Concise accurate recap given on previous lesson and realistic attainable objectives set for the current lesson. There was dialogue, with pupil involvement. Consistently demonstrated the ability to vary/select the most appropriate instructional techniques as necessary to suit
Grade 6: Overall performance is at a very high standard...the needs, aptitude and ability of the pupil. Quick to recognise and address all important driving faults and provided thoroughly sound analysis, with clear, prompt and appropriate remedial action. An appropriate route chosen for the pupil's ability and experience and took every opportunity to develop the pupil's driving skills and awareness using the problems presented en-route. Structured an appropriate learning environment that positively encouraged the pupil to further develop their skills and good driving practise. The lesson concluded with a concise recap, which was an accurate overview of the lesson. The strengths and weaknesses in the pupil's performance identified and discussed constructively. Realistic and appropriate objectives set for the next lesson. Professional attitude and approach to the pupil throughout the lesson.

Trainee or Fully Qualified? Things to note…
  • Qualified ADIs will display a GREEN licence on the windscreen of their car
  • ADI's MUST have passed ALL their exams
  • PDI's will have a PINK licence on display
  • PDI's have yet to pass all of their exams
  • Very few PDI's qualify to become ADI's
  • Both ADIs and PDI's must display their licence if they are giving paid tuition. They would be breaking the law otherwise.

How do I choose an Approved Driving Instructor?

A driving Instructor who has a Pink badge, will still be in the process of qualifying for the final exam. Many of these trainees do not go on to qualify and the official pass rate is about 25%.

Some of the countries largest driving schools use a high proportion of trainees and will generally charge the same rate for their services.

Before a person can be accepted on to the official register of driving Instructors they must complete a criminal records check to establish if they will be safe to work with the general public.

Try not to be guided by price or driving and teaching techniques. Do a little research by following the above guidelines. However, remember that around 5% of all driving instructors are Fully Qualified Grade 6 ADI’s.
